South Dakota Republican Party Statement on death of Jean Rounds, former first lady & wife to US Senator Mike Rounds
Jean Rounds, wife of US Senator Mike Rounds and former First Lady of South Dakota passed away today after a long and courageous fight with cancer. After the announcement by Senator Rounds’ office, South Dakota Republican Party Chairman Dan Lederman made the following statement:
“This has been a tough week for Republicans, losing two people who have been truly beloved for their contributions to South Dakota. First Governor Farrar on Sunday, and today we have lost former First Lady Jean Rounds.
“Jean was the bedrock which enabled and gave Senator Rounds the ability to serve our State. When she became First Lady, Jean gave credit to the advice she received from another First Lady, Mary Dean Janklow, to ‘always keep your family first.’ And with her family, she certainly did. Jean was that grounding force for Mike Rounds, as well as being his partner in life. As long as I’ve known them, it has always been Mike and Jean.”
“In addition to being a mother of 4, Jean was in government service as the assistant to the South Dakota Transportation Secretary, and never sought the limelight. Yet after 17 years in State Government, she found herself giving speeches as an advocate for parents reading to children, as well as for preventing heart disease in women.”
“Jean was a genuinely nice and authentic person, and we will truly miss her. On behalf of the entire Republican Party, we offer our condolences. Please keep the Rounds family in your prayers.”
